Tenerife diaries - The tour guide

8/11/2017

Tenerife is the biggest from the Canary Islands's 7 islands, still it has only about 890 thousand inhabitants. Even though it's fairly small, it has a lot to offer, so one thing is sure, you won't be bored if you decide to visit Tenerife. Most of the visitors chose the south part of the island as their holiday destination, because there are a lot of those famous black sand beaches there. We travelled a little bit north to Puerto de Santiago which has a huge advantage; you're able to see Los Gigantes, the huge mountains. We spent 2 days exploring the city and we mostly checked out the northern sights.

Első utunk alkalmával lenéztünk Garachico városára, ami azért számít érdekesnek, mert 1700-as évek elején elöntötte a Teide vulkánból kitörő láva. Szerencsére a várost újjáépítették, így bárki megcsodálhatja a magasból.
Candelaria-ban találjuk a Kanári-szigetek legfőbb katolikus szentélyét a Candelariai Miasszonyunk-bazilikát.

Our first trip led to the town of Garachico, which is an interesting sight, because the hot lava from the Teide volcano destroyed it completely at the beginning of the 1700s. Luckily they rebuilt it since then, so everyone can admire it from above.
The Canary-islands' most important catholic sanctuary is the Basilica of the Royal Marian Shrine of Our Lady of Candelaria. The interesting fact is that almost all chuches are called this so you really can't go wrong if you just say that you saw this one.

*San Cristobal de la Laguna was the former capital of the Canary Islands, where you'll find wooden balconies and beautiful green parks. The downtown of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage sight because of the unique architecture.

Santa Cruz de Tenerifen nyüzsgő nagyváros, ahol a megszokott európai fővárosokból jól ismert üzletek keverednek a mediterrán stílussal, Dél-Amerikát idéző szűk utcákon.

On the way to Santa Cruz de Tenerife to La laguna, you'll find a few laurel forests, which is a must see, because there are only 3 places on Earth where you can still find them; Madeire, the Azores and Tenerife. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is busy capital, where you'll find everything you usually do in an european city, but here it's mixed with some South American vibes.
Talking about South America; did you know that they used some Tenerifean cities as inspiration for Cuban towns? Like Icod de los Vinos, where besides tasting al the delicious wine and banana liquor, you'll find the 1000 year old tree.
Last but not least, we visited the biggest attraction in Tenerife, the volcano called Teide. It is the highest point of Spain and lookes exactly like you were on the Moon. As a matter of fact, they did some experiments here regarding the Moon landing and they shot a lot of movies and commercials here as well.

*Between 1833 and 1927 Santa Cruz de Tenerife was the sole capital of the Canary Islands, but since 1927 it shares the title with Las Palmas, so the Parliament moves from one city to the other, every 4 years.

*The tap water on Tenerife isn't drinkeable, but they cleanse ground water with this plant, through these fountains, and locals drink this.

Besides all the sights, take time for a little beach visit as well. The south beaches are waiting for you with black sand and if you head north, you can sunbathe on these cool rocks. One of my favourite things on this holiday were the natural pools that developed by the coast. They are way more interesting and fun than just a plain sandy beach :)
